In the Bakumatsu era, at the end of the shoguns' rule over Japan in the middle of the 19th century: the Tokugawa shogunate uses the brainwashing Heaven's Songs by the top idols in Shinsengumi to subjugate the country and its people. In this Japan, writing or singing any songs besides the Heaven's Songs is a capital offence. Sakamoto Ryouma and the other rockers rise up and change the world with rock 'n' roll for freedom and justice.

Bakumatsu Rock (幕末Rock) is a Japanese video game by Marvelous AQL. It was adapted into a manga series, Bakumatsu Rock -howling soul-, that began on March 28, 2014 and into an anime television series, Samurai Jam -Bakumatsu Rock-, that premiered on July 2, 2014.[1][2][3][4] The anime is streamed on Crunchyroll.[5] Another game, Bakumatsu Rock: Ultra Soul, was released on September 25, 2014.[6]

On Anime News Network, Hope Chapman, Carl Kimlinger and Rebecca Silverman gave the first episode of the anime a rating of 2 out of 5 and Theron Martin gave it a rating of 3.5 out of 5.[7]

L’edizione di aprile del mensile Animedia ha annunciato la messa in produzione di una serie anime TV per il videogioco Bakumatsu Rock, ed ha rivelato che il debutto dell’anime è già stato fissato per l’estate 2014.

Il gioco è ambientato nell’era Bakumatsu e parla di un’avventura rivoluzionaria combattuta a suon di musica rock, lo slogan è “Dai inizio alla rivoluzione dell’era Bakumatsu a colpi di canzoni! 
Siamo in Giappone nell’era Bakumatsu alla fine del dominio dello shogun – metà XIX secolo –; lo shogunato Tokugawa utilizza i top idol della Shinsengumi per soggiogare i cittadini e la nazione. Quando i membri della Shinsengumi cantano la “Heaven's Song”, la popolazione subisce un totale lavaggio del cervello. Comporre musica, cantare o suonare altre canzoni, che non siano la “canzone del paradiso”, è severamente proibito, i trasgressori sono puniti con la pena capitale. Ciò nonostante, Ryoma Sakamoto e un gruppo di rocker si ribelleranno, e cercheranno di cambiare il mondo: rock 'n' roll per la libertà, rock 'n' roll per la giustizia!

Itsuro Kawasaki (Arc the Lad) dirige il progetto presso lo  Studio DEENMitsutaka Hirota (The Prince of Tennis IIX-Men) cura la sceneggiatura; mentre Akiharu Ishii (The Prince of TennisBlood+,Loups=Garous) disegna i personaggi.
